Award recognizes commitment to immigrant youth and families

Deutsche Bank was honored by Union Settlement for its Anchoring Achievement initiative, part of the bank’s global education and youth engagement program, Born to Be.

At a gala in New York City on April 26, the nonprofit organization Union Settlement honored the bank for its commitment to immigrant youth and families. Accepting the award, Nicole Leach, Head of Education for Deutsche Bank Americas Foundation, thanked Union Settlement for its partnership “in ensuring all children and families in East Harlem have a bright start and a bright future and a strong neighborhood to come home to.”

One of New York City’s oldest and largest social service agencies, Union Settlement has empowered East Harlem residents of all ages since 1895. The organization played a lead role in the bank’s award-winning Anchoring Achievement in Mexican Communities initiative, a three-year demonstration project launched in 2013 to improve the long-term educational and economic well-being of Mexican families in New York City.

As the lead agency for the initiative’s work in East Harlem, Union Settlement provided high-quality early childhood and after-school supports for families in the neighborhood and helped them access critical wraparound services. Thanks in part to the bank’s work with Union Settlement, the Anchoring Achievement initiative touched over 12,000 lives and counted 19,947 total points of contact with young learners and high schoolers, and their families, in three years.

Employees volunteer with Union Settlement as well. In partnership with Free Arts NYC, volunteers provide arts-based mentorship to low-income children throughout the city, including many in East Settlement’s programs. In December of last year, Corporate Finance Americas organized a holiday gift drive for the children in Union Settlement’s programs. Employees donated 441 toys and books in less than a week.
