Transforming lives through the gift of music

The universal language of music brings people from all backgrounds together and can change how they see themselves and the world around them. For young people in particular, music can open up a new world of opportunities.

Through its Born to Be youth engagement programme, Deutsche Bank seeks to empower and transform communities through music. In Hong Kong, Deutsche Bank partners with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of Hong Kong (MYO) to provide music scholarships for young talents from disadvantaged backgrounds. The scholarship programme gives recipients weekly music training, performing opportunities and the opportunity to take part in an international music exchange to broaden their music knowledge and experience.

Healing powers

Ryan Au is a talented violinist in the programme. He is autistic and attends a school for young people with special needs. His music teacher introduced him to the instrument when he was 10.

Since joining the programme, his confidence level has grown leaps and bounds. Playing as part of an orchestra has improved his social and communication skills. His father, Mr Au Kam Shuen, says of Ryan’s progress, “After receiving the scholarship, Ryan has matured and his outlook has broadened. He has become a more responsible person and he seems to manage himself better.”

The sky's the limit

To be part of the programme, scholars like Ryan and twins Hugo and Jayden Pang from challenging financial backgrounds audition in front of a panel of Deutsche Bank executives and music directors from the MYO. With a scholarship, they learn from the world’s finest musicians and educators from various orchestras and institutions around the world.

This is a highlight for many of the scholars. Ryan's first flying experience on an airplane was with the MYO for a two-week music learning tour in Vienna. Travelling to a vastly different location exposes the scholars to new cultures, food and languages. This gives them confidence beyond their comfort zone.

Platform to shine

Apart from supporting the scholars in their music training and life skills, Deutsche Bank is also a strong believer in providing them with a platform to shine. Every year, the scholars perform centrestage with the orchestra in a 2,000 audience concert hall. There are marked improvements in the scholars across the years – not only on stage but also in how they interact with others. Deutsche Bank is proud to help them become who they were born to be.
