Deutsche Bank has named the Slovakian artist Roman Ondák “Artist of the Year 2012”. The 45-year-old was chosen based on a recommendation by the first-rate Deutsche Bank Global Art Advisory Council, comprised of the renowned curators Okwui Enwezor, Hou Hanru, Udo Kittelmann, and Nancy Spector, and chaired by Pierre de Weck, member of Deutsche Bank AG’s Executive Committee. The official announcement will be made at the Frieze Art Fair in London.
“We are pleased to present the award to Roman Ondák, one of the most important Eastern European artists,” says Pierre de Weck. “In his works, Ondák asks us to view art and life from new perspectives.”
Roman Ondák was born in Bratislava in 1966. His works have been shown in many international exhibitions, most recently at Modern Art Oxford, Kunsthaus Zürich, and this year’s Venice Biennale. The Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin, a unique cooperative venture between the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Deutsche Bank, will present new works by the artist in a comprehensive exhibition from April 26 to June 24, 2012.
With the “Artist of the Year” award, Deutsche Bank honors and promotes young artists who have created extraordinary photo works or works on paper. In 2011, the Moroccan artist Yto Barrada was the “Artist of the Year.” The year before, the recipient was Wangechi Mutu from Kenya.
