Deutsche Bank names Yto Barrada “Artist of the Year 2011”

As part of the Frieze Art Fair in London today, Deutsche Bank will name Yto Barrada as its "Artist of the year" for 2011. Barrada is the second woman the bank is honoring with this award, having given it to Wangechi Mutu in 2010.

Pierre de Weck, a member of Deutsche Bank AG’s Group Executive Committee and Chairman of the Deutsche Bank Global Art Advisory Council, said: "A key focus of our global art activities is to engage with different cultures and social realities. Yto Barrada is therefore an excellent choice as ‘Artist of the Year 2011’.”

Yto Barrada’s work reflects the particular situation of her hometown, Tangier, Morocco, at the intersection of Arab, African and European cultures. Barrada’s photographs, films and installations heighten awareness of the shifting cultural, economic and political boundaries and their effects.
Works by Barrada have been shown at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and San Francisco, at the Venice Biennale in 2007, and at the Jeu de Paume in Paris.

The Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin will show a selection of works by the artist from April 15 to June 19, 2011 in a comprehensive solo exhibition.
