Deutsche Bank Supports Pipilotti Rist’s First Museum Show in Japan
From November 17 until February 11, 2008, the Hara Museum for Contemporary Art will present Pipilotti Rist’s first large solo show to be held in a Japanese museum. Entitled ‘Pipilotti Rist: Karakara’, the exhibition in Tokyo will contain ten representative works by the important Swiss artist. After the 2006 Hara Museum show ‘Tokyo Blossoms’ from the Deutsche Bank Collection, Deutsche Bank’s sponsorship of this exhibition is the second cooperation between the bank and the renowned Japanese institution for contemporary art.
Pipilotti Rist is considered one of the path-breaking artists in the international art world. She studied in Vienna and Basel and was a member of the Zurich women’s band Les raines prochaines. She became known mainly for her video works that oscillate between lyricism and aggression. In them, she reflects on everyday situations, interrogating in particular female patterns of behaviour in an often tongue in cheek fashion. In 2001, she was represented at the Venice Biennale and received the prestigious art award Premio 2000.
The exhibition at the Hara Museum, where ten installations present an overview of Rist’s work, stands under the motto ‘Karakara’. This title, chosen by the artist, is Japanese and is onomatopoeic both for barrenness as well as for carefree laughter. This ambiguity reflects Rist’s desire to counter theoretical concepts in art with a humorous lightness.
Deutsche Bank’s support of ‘Pipilotti Rist: Karakara’ builds on a long-standing connection to the artist. Already in 1999, Deutsche Bank was the sponsor of her exhibition at Kunsthalle Zürich, and that same year acquired one of her video stills for the corporate collection. The cooperation continued in 2003, when Pipilotti Rist received the 01 Award, which Deutsche Bank awarded annually together with Berlin’s Universität der Künste. This award also included a visiting professorship at the UdK.
The cooperation between Deutsche Bank and Tokyo’s Hara Museum also continues a tradition of partnership: in 2006, the exhibition ‘Tokyo Blossoms’ was on show there. After the first stop of the anniversary show celebrating the twenty-fifth year of Deutsche Bank’s corporate collection at Deutsche Guggenheim Berlin, the Hara Museum in Tokyo showed a selection of works chosen together with the curators of the Japanese museum. Imbedded in the exhibition design by the star architect Zaha Hadid, Tokyo Blossoms provided a new perspective on Deutsche Bank’s collection.
