Public debate within Europe often focuses on the challenges that the continent faces, in particular its ability to compete in an increasingly fragmented geopolitical order. Yet a new Deutsche Bank survey of senior decision-makers from around the world paints a different picture.
In the latest episode of our This is Deutsche Bank podcast, Alexander von zur Mühlen, Chief Executive Officer Asia-Pacific, Europe, Middle East & Africa, and Germany and Management Board member at Deutsche Bank, joins host Michael Steen to discuss how international investors view Europe today. The conversation is based on a new Deutsche Bank survey of 1,200 business leaders and decision-makers across 13 non-European markets.
Why are global investors increasingly interested in Europe?
At a time of geopolitical uncertainty and economic fragmentation, stability has become a valuable asset. According to the survey, more than 80 percent of respondents say Europe has become more important to their investment decisions in recent years. Europe is widely viewed as a reliable and resilient region, offering long-term predictability in an increasingly volatile world.
As von zur Mühlen explains, many of the qualities Europeans may take for granted, such as strong institutions, political stability and international connectivity, are seen by investors elsewhere as important competitive advantages.
Is investor confidence translating into action?
The survey suggests it is. More than 60 percent of respondents are planning specific investments in Europe over the coming years. Interest is not limited to companies already active in the region; many organisations without an established European footprint are also considering investment opportunities.
What challenges still need to be addressed?
The positive sentiment is accompanied by a clear message. Investors point to bureaucracy, regulatory complexity, taxation and labour costs as barriers to growth, along with the fragmentation of the European market.
For von zur Mühlen, the opportunity is clear: Europe needs to build on existing strengths while making it easier for businesses to invest, grow and operate across borders.
What role can Deutsche Bank play?
As one of Europe's leading global banks, Deutsche Bank helps connect international capital with opportunities across the continent. With a presence in more than 60 markets and deep expertise across regions, the bank supports clients as they navigate complex investment decisions and expand into new markets.
Or, as von zur Mühlen puts it in the podcast: “Capital is standing at the door. Europe now needs to open the door.“
