Accelerating Impact of Climate Change

Tuesday, January 22, 2019. 12:00 – 13:30

Data shows that the effects of climate change are accelerating. It appears unlikely that the world will be able to limit global temperature rises to 1.5 or even 2 degrees Celsius. Countries that have signed the climate protection agreement are not fulfilling their commitments to slow global warming. Moreover, a large number of emerging regions in particular are suffering the consequences of this change. Is the Arctic the new frontier for geopolitical and climate challenges? Can we indeed slow the pace of climate change? What political, social and technological levers can we use?

Olafur Iceland

Quotes:

Ólafur Grímsson, former president of Iceland: “The climate crisis is an energy crisis. The new geopolitics of the renewables revolution.”

“The emerging climate leaders are business corporations and cities. Only the enlightened will survive!”

Melting ice

“The Arctic is at the frontier of climate change. Melting ice is creating extreme and destructive weather and causing sea levels to rise around the world”
